ALAPPUZHA: The Janakeeya Hotels (budget hotels) launched by Kudumbashree Mission have proven to be a big relief to those who find it difficult to survive the lockdown. As many as 417 janakeeya hotels have been distributing lunch packets to around 40,000 people across the state since April 3 at a nominal rate of Rs 20 per packet.
Ernakulam district has the highest number of ‘janakeeya hotels’ in the state 67, of which 45 are functioning in rural areas.”Our hotels are a big hit and each unit generates a daily revenue of Rs 6,000. We have 44 lakh members as part of our neighborhood groups (NHGs) across the state. A minimum of three or maximum 10 NHG members can set up a janakeeya hotel. One janakeeya hotel can be set up in each gram panchayat and one hotel can be set up for 10 wards in a municipality and corporations. There are hotels that distribute 50 to 1,000 lunch packets a day. These hotels are functioning with the help of sponsors, funds from local bodies and revolving funds of Kudumbashree Mission, which range from Rs 10,000 to 50,000,” said a Kudumbashree official .
Many janakeeya hotels are serving breakfast (Rs 30-40) and dinner (Rs 20-40) too. Alappuzha assistant district mission coordinator P Sunil said that when a janakeeya hotel distributes a lunch packet for Rs 20, the hotel gets Rs 30 per packet as Kudumbashree Mission gives Rs 10 subsidy for each packet. “The civil supplies department is providing 600kg rice per month at Rs 10.90 per kg to each janakeeya hotel. The lunch packets can be bought directly from the hotel between 12 noon and 3pm. Door delivery is also available within 2km radius of the hotel and Rs 5 is being charged for that,” Sunil said.
Apart from food distribution, Kudumbashree is also aiding the state’s Covid-19 battle. The agency has made and sold more than 34.45 lakh cotton masks through around 306 tailoring units. Also, 21 micro enterprises of Kudumbashree have prepared 5,388 liters of sanitizers until May 25. It has also started making face shields for medical staff engaged in treatment of Covid-19 patients.
