David Lund, a hotel financial coach, credits Stephen King’s book “On Writing” for transforming his career. Lund’s journey as a writer began with a reluctant assignment to create a guidebook, which eventually became a daily practice that helped him find his voice and share his expertise.
Lund’s fascination with Stephen King’s work started when he read “The Shining” while working at the Algonquin Hotel in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada. Although King’s book was inspired by the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, Lund and his friends believed the Algonquin was the real character in the novel.
Lund had read several of King’s books, but it wasn’t until he read “On Writing” that he felt a strong connection to the author’s message. King’s book emphasizes that writing is about enriching the lives of readers and the writer themselves, rather than seeking fame or fortune.
Finding Inspiration in Stephen King’s Words
According to King, “Writing is magic, as much the water of life as any other creative art. The water is free. So, drink. Drink and be filled up.” Lund took King’s words to heart, realizing that anyone can write as long as they are committed, resilient, and brave enough to start.

Lund’s own writing journey began in 2016, when he was struggling to find success in his coaching career. He signed up for a coaching program led by Debbie, which required him to write a “seven secrets” guidebook on his niche. This assignment marked the beginning of Lund’s daily writing habit, which helped him develop his voice and share his thoughts.
Lund’s writing habit started with him sitting on his lawn chair, writing his first piece while his dog was by his side. He felt a sense of uncertainty, wondering who he was to make claims and statements, but he was hooked on the feeling of expressing himself. As he continued to write, Lund developed more ideas.
Reading “On Writing” had a profound impact on Lund, and he knew that he would write for the rest of his life. He felt grateful for King’s inspiration and guidance.
Lund’s experience as a writer has taught him the importance of commitment, resilience, and courage. He believes that anyone can become a writer, regardless of their background or experience, as long as they are willing to start and keep writing. Lund’s story is a demonstration of the power of writing and the impact it can have on one’s life and career.
